I don’t know… what’s a shaytan? I’m Christian so this may be due to mere ignorance, but now I’m curious.

edit: I love wikipedia. Shaytan is Satan, right? Let’s just say, I wouldn’t be surprised.

And people, assalamualaikum means “peace be with you,” so don’t be rude!

Bismillahi Rahmani Rahim

Salaam Alaikum wa Rahmatullah

It is true that the Shaitan can make us more susceptible to both physical and mental illnesses, because we can become depressed by his evil whispering and neglect ourselves spiritually and physically. HOWEVER, it is well documented that many if not most mental illnesses have some biological basis, either through heredity or through some sort of birth defect / difference in brain development / brain injury. It is unfair to brand a person as having “weak faith” if he or she suffers from mental illness. That would be like saying a person with diabetes is “weak” because his pancreas cannot produce insulin. The body is controlled by chemicals, and in this day and age it is easy for the delicate balance to be upset by diet, lifestyle, or enviromental pollutants.

My mother is a psychologist, and with her clients she takes a multi-pronged approach. You have to treat the whole person, his body, his mind, his spirit. Even if a mental illness has a clear physical basis, it can be made worse when a person is spiritually disconnected, when he lives a life devoid of trust in Allah and when he listens to the whisperings of Shaitan. There are those whose illnesses are purely due to the influence of Shaitan and they will be cured if they reconnect to their belief in God and then Shaitan will have no power to influence them. For others, there has to be a combination of treatment, from medicine and counseling to behavioral therapy to spiritual guidance.

Muslims are not forbidden from seeking mental health treatment, but they should be careful to seek treatment from religious Muslim doctors. Non-Muslim psychologists, psychiatrists, and therapists are often atheists and many see religous belief as just another “complex” to be gotten over. If there are no Muslim therpists available, then Muslims should do just as they do with Muslim medical doctors – take the good advice and treatment and leave what is unIslamic.

Mental illness is a terrible thing. I have a niece who is bipolar, may Allah give her hedayah (I am the only Muslim in my family so far). She has a clear hereditary influence from her father, who is mentally ill, and his mother as well. She takes medication and is in counseling and is struggling to cope. It would be facile for me to tell her to go off her meds and “trust in Allah”. Allah tells us to seek knowledge from those who are knowledgeable, and that includes mental health practitioners. But we have to do it with hikmah, wisdom, and always remember that we are Muslims first and that we have to use prayer and supplication as a first line of any treatment, physical or mental. And Allah knows best.

Fi Aman Allah,
Nancy Umm Abdel Hamid

Actually, they say these things are people that are far from Allah. That if your close with him you will not be depressed, etc.

Feeling depressed is but human; Islam does not want us to be superhuman; it only wants us to get out of this state as soon as possible.
In this regard, the true philosophy of life should be understood. We have been created by the Almighty to be tested and tried (67:2). This trial is conducted through the circumstances we are put in. If we are put through good circumstances, then our trial is whether we remain thankful to the Almighty, who gave us without asking and without our having any right. If we are put through bad circumstances, then our trial is whether we show perseverance and patience in these times or not.
Both these circumstances generally come in a person’s life. They are his real test. He cannot be given total happiness or total misery since that would make the trial profoundly difficult.
It is evident from the Qur’an that the Almighty tests us through hardships:

1. to punish us for our own misdoings (42:30),
2. to shield us from greater misery (18:74, 18:79),
3. to sift out the evil within us (3:179),
4. to give us the opportunity to earn reward by showing patience (3:142, 76:12).

In such circumstances, a person must remember that Allah is our only Saviour and Refuge. One Whom we will never lose like our other relations; Who is always with us and Who always thinks well for us. Our objective as a Muslim is to surrender to His will, since we know that He always means well for us. This is the essence of Islam.

Actually, reason of depression and anxiety is Moral rot and social deterioration and separation.

Sex before marriage, homosexuality, sexual abuse, rape, bullying, alcohol, opression and injustice are the main reason of depression and anxiety. Of course there are other reasons, but they are minimal and mostly linked to those indirectly.

All of these reason are linked together. One cause the another.

-Latest sudies of depression and anxiety showed that 26% of american suffer from mental illness, 24% of canadian also.

-3 out 5 french thought about *******.

- Half the teens of Hongkong suffer from moderate to severe depression.

- 23 to 42 % of the arab societies suffer from depression and anxiety.

What is importnt about that, the dramatic increase in those rates. we didnt have half of these rates before one decade.

Treating mental illnesses is so hard and healing is very low.

The best solution is to make change the international life style people are living from roots.

This is what liberal life lead us to, freedom of self destruction.

In Islam, we believe in optimum freedom where human is protected physically and mentally.

Umm Talal: “Actually, they say these things are people that are far from Allah. That if your close with him you will not be depressed, etc.”

And they are wrong. That would be the sickest, saddest, refusenik attitude against science and against people who are afflicted with something beyond their control.

Kudos to sister Umm Abdel Hamid. Thank you, sister.

Pain, physical illness, mental illness, etc. can also (in addition to what Sister Nancy Umm Abdel Hamid said) be a test. It is not always a test, but there can be times when it is sent as a test, as in the case of Prophet Job/Ayyub. There is a saying in Islam that one receives thawab when he suffers pain with patience – some sayings describe one’s sins beging forgiven on account of suffering pain with patience. This is by no means a call for the disposal of Tylenol. I would take two and suffer the pain patiently until the medicine begins to work.
