How did slavery influence the south’s economy, society, and culture prior to the Civil War? Why were most southerners so resistant to abolition? How did southerners defend slavery? Why did slavery as a labor system upset northerners? What labor system did they support?

Slavery WAS the South’s industry. The South was mainly farming and cotton plantations, therefore they needed people to do the hard work, so they had slaves. Southerners didn’t want to abolish slavery, because it was their way of life, it was how they earned a living. In fact the South was so scared of abolition, that they refused to put Abe Lincoln’s name on the presidential ballot in 1860 in fear he would abolish slavery. Northerners preferred to hire Americans to work in the mills and factories, so they were upset by the South choosing to get cheap labor, and felt slavery was wrong.

The cultivation of cotton had become simpler and, more importantly, faster, so planters utilizing Eli Whitney’s invention were better able to meet the growing demand for the crop. As a result, cotton growers enjoyed hefty profits and sought to expand their thriving enterprise by purchasing more land and more slaves. Aided by the opening of the western frontier and by industrial growth in the North, the South became a virtual cotton-growing empire by the early nineteenth century.

Slavery was the souths economy. they depended greatly on slaves! They were also VERY brutal to them and thought of them as “animals” and beat, killed, hung, etc for no great reason such as taking a 5 miniute break would get you killed! Hope this helps.
