How many people really understand the necessity for both Liberals and Conservatives in a society?

10
Now, this is just my theory, but I thought I would put it out there to see how it goes over.

To me, it can be compared to a car. Liberals are the accelerator. They push a society forward, as progress is a natural occurrence. Conservatives are like the brakes, keeping things from going to far too fast.

Working together, they create a balance that allows for a safe progression.

Liberals and Conservatives should not be enemies. They should work together to create a balanced society.

Any thoughts?

I see no necessity for either of them.

And yet, societies all over the world continue to exist.

Agreed. But I get kinda pissed when the brakes tell the accelerator that they **** for trying to move at all.

I have respect for some liberals… But some are just pathetically stupid–same with some conservatives…

Think how much better we would be balanced if the conservatives actually argued intelligently, instead of ranting and lying. Bill Buckley is probably rolling in his grave at the state of the Republican party.

Agree. Since the breaks have been applied for 8 years the need to accelerate has grown tremendously.

DEEP, WIDESPREAD CUTS IN DOMESTIC PROGRAMS OVER
NEXT FIVE YEARS UNDER ADMINISTRATION BUDGET
By 2009, funding for non-entitlement programs in areas such as national resources and the environment, veterans health benefits, health, and agriculture would be 10 percent to 20 percent below the 2004 funding levels, adjusted for inflation. Transportation programs, as well as education, training, and social services programs, would be cut by 7 to 8 percent over this period.
The proposed cuts are so large, an accompanying Center report shows, that by 2009, total funding for domestic non-entitlement programs outside homeland security would fall to its lowest level, measured as a share of the economy, since 1963.

So they cut spending to the level of 1963 and then have a fit because money has to be spent to bring the programs back to a reasonable functioning level?

I do.

I am a conservative and I do believe that liberals play an important role.

I do not think they are necessary. As a matter of fact, I think they’re both equally damaging. Think of their effect on society as a pendulum. Full freedom means the pendulum is able to swing up to 90° in either direction, equating to social and economic freedoms (left and right, respectively). Now, conservatives generally believe in social regulation and fiscal freedom. Liberals are the opposite. We start the nation’s pendulum swinging, and the conservatives block some of the pendulum’s swing to the left with laws regulating what you can do. Then liberals come into power, and block the swing to the right with laws about how you can earn and spend money. Whenever a new group comes into power they give the pendulum a nudge in their respective direction, but it never overcomes what was lost. Restrictive laws pile up over time. Conservatives and liberals are thus like friction. Given enough time the pendulum will come to a stop due to that friction, and we’ll have no freedoms. And it won’t be either side’s fault more than the other.

The car analogy only works if you only use one or the other at any given time. Try stamping down on the accelerator while holding on to the brakes. Depending on your car your tires, your engine, or your brake pads are going to blow out in a screaming hurry.
