What evidence is there to support the Christian belief that society is worse off without religion?

Isn’t there pretty good evidence to support the opposite of this; society is better off WITHOUT religion?

Look at ancient Rome. Also, the United States was founded on Christian beliefs.

Without God’s laws, I would probably hunt child molesters for fun. I would probably steal, why should some stinking ***** dealer have a nicer house than me?? I would probably also hunt and slaughter rapists.. I don’t know, maybe we would be better off that way

i really dont think theres evidence either way. the only societies i know with lack of religion are countries that fell due to bad political practices. so the results of a religion-less society are tainted by its politics

society would be better off without religion if mankind wasnt so easily corrupted.
if we all had the same mentality that we did when we were born, there wouldnt be any reason for god to give us instructions on how to be decent people.

No! You see even though it might seem so, in actuality people are highly stupid and need rules. If their is nothing like hell for example forcing these rules then we have people in dysfunction and not having any real reason to be good and also people are lazy! They do nothing for others less alone themselves half of the time so we do in a sense need “lies” and “religion” in moderation of course, to help us stay on trak and when I say evil I mean things that actually matter like **** and murder!

The flapping of a butterfly’s wing is enough to cause major changes in the world. There is no way anyone can predict either way.

There is none they always like to bring up people like Hitler, Stalin or some other idiot that forced people to worship them or be executed.

Life would be so much easier if everyone just followed 1 simple commandment to Love and treat people as you would want them to treat you ;)

I don’t know how this question could ever be resolved, since there aren’t any human societies without religion to compare to.

Well… compare the USA (religiously biased) to the UK (religion is a sort of minority hobby and a bit of a national joke to everyone else). Having spent some time in both places, I like being British. We have far more equality (I’m ********** so I feel deeply about this), no politicians appealing to god to support their daft ideas so they have to stand or fall on logic, and no problems about wrongly executing murderers when they later turn out to be innocent because we abolished the death penalty about the time I was born 40+ years ago (I say this because the USA is the most religious country in the western civilised world and also the only one that still executes people – I’m convinced the two are linked). Religion really does children’s heads in and we have much less of that kind of mental abuse. I think that’ll do for starters as evidence.

If we want to know what a society without religion would look like, we only have to look at the regimes of secular tyrants like Stalin and Mao who imposed massive hardship, suffering, and bloodshed on their subjects.

There is plenty of evidence that society is better off without religion — compare, e.g., the present society to the past eras of Christian domination.

In places where religion is banned, the people do stupid and dangerous things to practice their various religions in secret. I’m not saying that this doesn’t happen in societies that are openly religious (it does), but since it’s practicaly impossible to convince an entire society to willingly give up their religion, and a society that is forced to give up religion is no better off than we are now, it stands to reason that, for all practical purposes, we would be no better without religion, than we are with it, right now.

If by some strange coincidence, an entire society did give up their religion, or if a large number of non religious people decided to form a society, of there own, there is a chance they would be better off (who could say until it happens?) But they might have the exact same problems in their society, that we religious folks have.

I think society is better off with the choice. The only way our society would be without religion is if it was forcefully taken away. Even then, people would secretly worship. We would never be better off without our right to believe in what we choose to. A society without rights would be the end of us.

Are we speaking ANY religion or just the Christian faith systems…maybe just Abrahamic faiths of Judaism, Islam and Christianity? Or would you like the world to be devoid of any religion at all because inevitably without religion is the development of culture empires such as communist North Korea where a person takes power and sets themselves up as the icon of worship. However, if you go back to all the pagan religions that date all the way back to through recorded history you will see that many of them were violent, rapacious, incestuous, slave dominating and barbaritious peoples. It was not until the time of Moses that a people were set aside to be purged of those practices and then taught the noble laws of marriage, kinship, trade, food and blood, sanitation, medicine, etc. Any culture that has followed those laws as they have swept the globe has prospered since then. Facts are facts. If you would like a fictional glimpse of reality…try watching the movie by Mel Gibson called Apocolypto. Nice. Choose life. Love in Christ, ~J~

You have no idea of how mistaken you are with that statement of your. Religion is the glue that keeps society from doing anything they desire, any time, any place. History can verify that statement. For example; Emperor Bonaparte of France said something similar to this, It is good to have religion because it controls the masses . In case you did not know it he was agnostic .( non believer )
Emperor Constantine of of Rome made Catholic Religion the official religion of the country. Why because the people were doing all kinds of things they should not be doing etc.He used religion as a form of control.too. History is a great learning tool. We can learn a lot from it. Constantine was a world leader. So what makes you think you know more then them?.
