Thunderous denunciations and Chicken Little predictions that the Pill would cause the sky to fall from pulpits all over the country.
People did freak out about it, but it kind of got folded into the generalized outrage expressed by conservatives at the thought of the women’s rights movement. Women thinking they’re equal!! Imagine that!!
There was so much social change going on – civil rights, women’s rights, opposition to the war, youth rebellion – that it kind of got crowded off the radar a bit. Young women supported it enthusiastically…so did young men. Many older women were relieved that their daughters weren’t going to be forced into marriage because of unplanned pregnancies. Older men had the most trouble with it.
