What if we lived in a society where people are paid one universal hourly wage?

For example, what if the hourly wage was, say, 20 dollars an hour no matter if you were a brain surgeon or you worked at Wal-Mart? Would less people become doctors? Would people be generally happier? Or less happy? How would society change?
These responses are fascinating, thanks! In thinking about it myself, I was wondering what could be done to create an environment in which people were free to do what they REALLY want to be doing; for example, if I want to be an artist, but I am stuck in my 9-5 doing something I **** so I can pay the bills…
regardless, thanks for the responses!
