What is the big emphasis society places about a girl having to have a boyfriend?

I refer to him as my significant other. Other people misunderstand and think he’s my boyfriend. Although he’s a pretty important part of my life, I would not like the word ‘boyfriend’ to be coined for him. It seems like society places such a heavy emphasis on dating and marriage, that having no boyfriend/husband is not even a possibility in life. My life is not very ‘alternative’ at all.
