What was the role of the common man in ancient society?

I know that my question is a bit vague (because of its dependence on the specific society), but I am looking for a synopsis on the overall role of the common man in ancient society. In most cases, the common man (slaves included) were lower class people who were not of great concern to the government. Could someone add onto that?
