Are we living in a society that retards the development of young people?

In the days before the industrial revolution it was quite common for young girls to be married at the age of 12 to about 14. Not coincidentally most girls begin menstruation around those ages. It was commonplace for teens to become parents in those days. Now days it is frowned upon. Marriage is not encouraged until the early twenties. This can be attributed to the rise of the modern education system, and possibly just the fact that people are living longer these days. I have also been reading on educational message boards, teachers, who say that if the curricula was taught right your average child should be college-ready by the eighth grade, but they spend years covering and re-covering the same things. My question is: Do you think that todays society is retarding the development of young people and keeping them “immature” longer than necessary? I am 17, and I’ve always felt this way, especially about the school system.
I feel very handicapped by society, and a school system implemented merely as a babysitting tool to keep kids off the streets during part of the day. Most anything I have learned of value, I have learned on my own.

Thanks for your input. I want to hear lots of oppinions.
