What was the first army/empire/society that had female warriors in their ranks?
This is just a personal interest I have. I’m looking for any instances in ancient history where women were enlisted in armies and did pretty much everything the men did.
Not individuals like Joan of Arc or Mulan, or things like field nurses or Molly Pitcher, but where it was normal for women to actually put on armor and use weapons and launch catapults and stuff.
Any time period before the 1900’s is preferred, and any society is okay.
