Is Twitter Destroying Society?


I read a comment today to a post about Twitter in which someone said they believed Twitter and sites like it are destroying society. I thought this was a pretty harsh statement although I can perfectly agree with some of the downsides to Twitter.

My argument is that I don’t think Twitter or other social networking sites are causing the problem. If there is in fact, any destruction of our society, it is happening within the society and not because of a social media platform. This platform of social media could make the problem more “in your face” than it might otherwise be but it’s not originating the issues.

While there will always be some who agree with sites like Twitter and others who are greatly opposed, I believe the real lesson to learn here is that we don’t use social media as a scapegoat for the problems that exist in our society.

By blaming it on Twitter, we’re not taking responsibility for what our generation has become. We are blaming a networking website that 100% relies on the people who use it to stay afloat. It is those members who make it what it is. Without the people, there would be no Twitter.
