I felt that it wasnt really a capitalistic society because a capitalist society would have way more freedom than the society in 1984.

The book is called Grendel. Not what you said. And he does become part of a society. A very corrupt one where he becomes disgusted with what he sees. However, he becomes drawn into it like everyone else.
