They point out that the judeo-christian ideal of egalitarianism hinders natural leadership impulses and threatens to mediocrify mankind.
I also have to admit I am not currently under the impression that all the gentleness and kindness of thepast decades of our society has exactly fostered the kind of intelligent, kind people we hoped it would.
Is there merit in the idea to leave the weak to their own destiny if society wants to stay strong and capable?
Admittedly, it’s a thought our conditioning makes us bristle at. But what is worse? A society eradicating itself through being too accommodating, or one ridding itself of weak elements as the animal kingdom would?
It is a dilemma, really.

Simply put we now define our existence using the scientific method. The modern technocratic society we live in full of electronic gadgets and products that create their own need to exist has taken the divinity out of our lives. We have in fact entered a new dark age defined by a lack of spiritualism, subjectivity, and self growth.
During the dark ages people were persecuted for their beliefs or lack of beliefs. New ideas and independent thinkers were persecuted and killed by the newly forming theocracies. Individualism in essence was stifled and killed by the emerging religous based governments of the time. Individuality, old spiritual beliefs, and novel ideas were viewed as heresy and were quickly replaced with government approved thought processes.
In comparison today’s societal values are not much different. Daring to be an individual or express views contrary to the popular belief systems created by the law makers and mass media is frowned upon. Ideas and unsanctioned novel thought processes are quietly killed by the controlling powers that seek to oppress and maintain the status quo.
Slowly our ability to make personal choices, voice differing opinions, and communicate without fear of governmental policing is disappearing. Unfortunately we gladly give up our human rights out of fear. Fear propagated by the mass media and piped into our living rooms and dens via the electronic devices designed to “make life easier”.
Our belief systems no longer belong to us but have been given away freely to the controlling powers of our government to do with as they see fit. We indeed are living in a dark age of technological dependence and governmental control.
Plato saw and wrote extensively about political systems in “The Republic” and saw that all eventually led to dictatorship or despotism. This is mainly because people have an innate desire to delegate their decision making to others. Anxiety and fear play a large role in this delegation and the government is more than happy to lead us like lambs as any good shepherd would. But, what happens when it is time to thin the flock? Who ultimately suffers at the hands of our inability to make decisions for ourselves?

Not so long ago we went through another revolution – the information and communication technology revolution. Entire production processes became fully controlled by microprocessors, sensors started measuring parameters on site, and computer-controlled robots started taking over jobs formerly executed by the ordinary worker. This had a similar effect on society – at first there was a big boom until the market became tight, and dictated by the necessity of making profit, many jobs were lost and people let go.
If you look at it today – there are not too many opportunities left of how we can make society right. Should we continue destroying more jobs than we can create, it might take a while alright, but at the end of the day, there will be only a hand full of people who actually work and have an income. We can’t afford to let everybody behind. We can’t afford to leave entire continents exposed to impoverishment.
So is it the battle to become rich, or is it the incredible pressure in some parts of society, what drives society? In most cases it is a bit of both. But we have to ask ourselves: Which are the values we follow? I think the central values are key to this. As long as everything is about money, society is bound to fail.
We need to think about what is important to us. There are social values that do count, but often become forgotten or we give priority to other things. What about friends, about caring for other people, about charity? Do we really have to wear the latest fashion, have the latest car, gadget or buy our entire furniture new when we move? Do we really have to do everything ourselves in order to save money? Shouldn’t we give other people an opportunity to earn some money too? Isn’t the right balance of every angle of our life better for us? These are just questions, I know. And there are certainly more questions than answer. But please do me a favour and think about it…
